My great great grandfather was William John Badham (his middle name is shown as James on his marriage certificate but as John on all other documents). He was born in the City of London in 1821 and baptised the same year in the United Parishes of Christ Church and St Leonard Foster Lane. He was the son of Richard (a servant at St Paul's School in the City of London) and Mary. Their family tree can be seen here (you will need to use the 'back' button in your browser to return to this page).
When William John married at St Leonard's Foster Lane in 1845, he was a warehouseman. By the time his second son was born in Southwark in 1845, William John was a grocer. By 1881 he was working as a hosier.
William John and his family lived in several different parts of London: the City, Finsbury, Southwark, Clerkenwell, Islington, Shoreditch and finally Bethnal Green. His death was registered in Bethnal Green in the December quarter of 1889. At least one of his sons lived in Hackney.
His son Richard Charles (my great grandfather) was a civil servant and was posted to many different parts of the country. His first posting was to Wilton, Wiltshire, where he met his wife, Alma Ann Brazier. Her family has been traced back to the 1640s. On his retirement, Richard Charles moved to East Dulwich.
One of his sons, Sidney George Badham (my grandfather) was a greengrocer. He went to Rugby to help his eldest brother, Ernest Charles Badham, in his greengrocery shop in the High Street. Later, Sidney George Badham and his wife Annie Katherine Holinshead moved to Aldershot where they opened a greengrocers in Union Street. My parents ran another Badham's greengrocery shop in the Market Place in Frome. Click here to see some photographs of the Badham shops.
